Class of 1984 Moosilauke Crew Cabin

On May 31, 2010, we dedicated the Class of 1984 Moosilauke Crew Cabin!

Over 500 '84s contributed to this great project over six years of fundraising leading up to our 25th reunion – and one more year after that, as we set our ambitions higher!

The new Crew Cabin will serve Dartmouth’s traditions well by housing future generations of the Moosilauke Lodge Crew, who welcome first-year students every fall to the call of the Hill Winds at Mt. Moosilauke. While building on the traditions of New England timber frame construction, the design of the new Crew Cabin represents the our Class's aspirations to establish new standards of excellence and to respond to the challenges of our time in terms of broad-reaching education and sustainability.

David Hooke ’84, a former general manager of the Dartmouth Outing Club, developed the initial project concept for our Class and turned its implementation into an enriching educational experience for members of the Dartmouth community through volunteer workshops involving dozens of Dartmouth students, alumni and staff.

Cary Bernstein ’84 brought together a team of five ’84 architects (Cola Parker, Tom Rivard, Chris Von Eckartsberg, Robert Young Jr. and herself), working pro bono to significantly enhance the original design of the Crew Cabin. The strong design and sustainability standards that this project embodies will surely inspire other projects at Dartmouth to follow.

On top of all that, Robert White '84 pulled together a team that produced a new Moosilauke Mountain Trail map, that is now available at the Ravine Lodge.

Well done '84s!

"Great idea and (as a former cru member) much needed! I wish I could have made it to Moosilauke to help build the cabin last fall, and I look forward to celebrating the supporters as well as the brains and the brawn that created it in May!

"I agree with Chuck & Cody - we would really shine with a well-endowed, targeted gift rather than just contributing seed funds. It would be truly special if interested class members could work on this together so that ours was a real Class of '84 effort and not just a Class of '84 donation. There are a number of us who have spent the last 25 years working in the fields of design, construction, sustainability and ecology (as well as the ever-critical fundraising) who would joyfully give thanks with the professional skills which were so well nutured during our years at Dartmouth. To collaborate on this incredible gift would enhance its legacy and our class memory."

"David,
Thanks for such an inspired idea. And Chuck, thanks for all that land!"

Peter Garfield

"This is a fabulous idea - I am all for it. Thanks to David for suggesting it."

Lisa Ragen Ide

"Fantastic idea! The freshman trip is so integral to the spirit of community that we all remember...and if we can help make sure that the trips end with a positive experience, we'll be creating quite a legacy. Count me in!"

David Shedd

"Let's go for it. I went on a Freshman canoe trip with the best bunch of people. Chuck Goss was among us. He never mentioned all that property. I was the one doing all the direction finding with a 1940s U.S. geological survey map. We only got lost a little bit. "

Kathleen Smith Fitzgerald

"The original idea of 25x25 was inspired by the property donated to the college by the Goss family. I/We (the board at that time) were hoping that the class would either like the idea of either purchasing more natural land, or using the money to upkeep the land and buildings that is already in use. Thanks David, for giving that seed idea a concrete direction."

Molly Wender

"All for it."

"Almost every freshman's 1st experience of Dartmouth as an institution begins at Mt. Moosilauke and the Ravine Lodge. We should make sure this experience is as excellent as any they will have in their next 4 years. I'm back in graduate school in Boston at my local community college (Harvard, I think they call it), and not even Harvard can boast their own 4,800 ft. peak and alpine lodge. Dartmouth's outdoor legacy isn't just PR, it's part of what makes us unique among Ivy League schools.

Many of us have sent in our $25 (or more) not knowing how it will be spent. I would like to see our class officers choose the best 84 project ideas to put to a class-wide vote by the end of 2007, so that our class will have a passionate commitment to a particular idea such as David Hooke's trails fund.

I and many others would be happy to make further, larger contributions to an excellent idea such as Hooke's. Instead of just "anchoring" the $260,000 trails fund, we ought to be able to raise the ENTIRE trails endowment in the run-up to 2009. The pride and sense of continuing contribution we will derive from FULLY endowing an ongoing college need (such as David has identified) will exceed anything we put on the plaque."

Cody Laumeister

"Sweet idea. Count me in. I may be a city slickah, but I have nothing but fond memories of Mousilauke and, what was that dance??? Just let me know what I have to do to back this. Do we vote? How do we contribute? Do we have to drink green coolaid or anything? And do we have to do that dance?? What was it called %$*% ? Seriously, I think this is the perfect gift, and it doesn't even need to be wrapped. Kudos, David. "

Linda (Beane) Freeley

"Oh, Lord Jasper, this choice is a "no-brainer." What a quintessential Dartmouth project! On what part of our College did 800/1000 of us have our introduction to The Dartmouth Experience? The trails! Thanks Dave, great idea!"

Al Chaker

"Great Idea! How do I contribute?

Charlie Burrus

"David -
Brilliant idea - I would be proud to support this as our class project!
Peace - Lucia"

Lucia Jackson

"
David,
Great idea.
As you know, Mooseiluake has been special to me and my family. I am so amazed at the quality of the trails (many sections even stepped with heavy stones) that it should be
a priorty to keep up.
The 82s did some $ raising as I recall.
I will be tqking an active role in giving participation-this should be targeted. "
